George’s named to ‘Southern Living’s’ most legendary Southern steakhouses list
There are many places to eat in The Shoals that residents love, but when it comes to steak, one name tends to be mentioned the most: George’s Steak Pit in Sheffield.
Now that recognition has extended past the boundaries of Northwest Alabama and beyond. “Southern Living” magazine recently named George’s as one of the 30 most legendary steakhouses in the South.
“We are incredibly honored by this recognition from ‘Southern Living,’” said representatives of the restaurant on social media. “It’s a testament to the hard work of our amazing staff and the loyalty of our patrons in The Shoals area.”
According to the website of the establishment, George’s Steak Pit was founded in the mid-1950s by George and Vangie Vafinis and has been in the same location for over 30 years.
George and Vangie retired in January of1984 after their efforts paid off.
Their son, Frank Vafinis, took over the business until January 2022 when he retired.
“Now the tradition is being carried on by Scott and Leigh Anna Trimble,” said the restaurant’s website. “One of the secrets to their success is the famous open pit. Grilling your freshly cut steaks, chicken and fresh fish over hickory logs assures you of a taste sensation you will not soon forget.
“Combine this with freshly breaded seafood, extensive wine list, delicious homemade desserts and courteous, professional service and we believe you will enjoy a dining atmosphere that will bring you back again and again.”
According to “Southern Living,” a good steakhouse is kind of like the perfect pair of jeans; it can be anything you want it to be. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone event with family or just looking for a casual weeknight dinner, our favorite steakhouses across the South are adaptable to any occasion.
“There may be fewer than 10,000 people who call Sheffield home, but people come from all over to snag a table at their legendary fine dining restaurant George’s Steak Pit,” said the article.
“We are thrilled to celebrate George’s being named one of the three most legendary steakhouses in Alabama by ‘Southern Living,” said Susann Hamlin, president and CEO of Colbert County Tourism. “For generations, George’s has been a cornerstone of our community, where families gather to create lasting memories. From celebrating milestones to simply enjoying a great meal, George’s has built a legacy of excellence.
“This recognition highlights not only the dedication of its owners but also the strong support of our community. It’s truly a testament to why George’s remains an exceptional place to dine.”
