Memorial Day program set for May 25
American Legion Post #31 of Tuscumbia is sponsoring the Annual Memorial Day Program on the front lawn of the Colbert County Courthouse, 201 N. Main St., Tuscumbia, at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 25, 2026. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
The Post 31 Honor Guard will present the colors and place the memorial wreath in honor of those who gave the supreme sacrifice for our country.
Keynote Speaker will be Post #31 Commander Doug Hargett, of Tuscumbia, whose topic will be “The Dead Will Be Remembered Through the Living”.

Shortly after his high school graduation, during the Cold War and the Vietnam era, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy CVA-67, for tours of duty in the Mediterranean just as the Yom Kippur war between Egypt and Israel broke out.
Upon honorable discharge in 1974, Doug moved back to Tuscumbia and began a career in State and local law enforcement, which spanned 41 years. He received an Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement from Northwest Shoals Community College, and later Graduated from the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
He has been a member of the American Legion Post 31 in Tuscumbia, for 18 years, where he has held various positions, including for the past 5 years serving as Post Commander.
Following the program, the public and all Veterans are invited to a barbecue Luncheon, compliments of Mr. L.O. Bishop, at the Church of Christ Annex ( across the street at the corner of Main and 4th Streets).
In case of inclement weather, both the program and luncheon will be held at the Church of Christ Annex.
