Alabama Hospice of the Shoals to host benefit yard sale

Alabama Hospice of The Shoals is hosting a yard sale June 5-6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of Medical Mall, 1404 E Avalon Avenue in Tuscumbia.

The yard sale will feature furniture and small appliances, baby items and kids’ toys, clothing, home décor and tools, books games and more.

According to Susan Coke, volunteer manager for Alabama Hospice of The Shoals, the yard sale will benefit the Hospice Promise Foundation.

“The Hospice Promise Foundation assists patients and families with essential, non-hospice related expenses they are unable to afford themselves, such as rent and utility bills, emergency repairs, personal care items and food assistance,” Coke said. “The foundation also provides funding for patients’ last wishes and burial assistance.”

Coke said the yard sale will feature a bit of everything, including a drink vendor and possibly a food truck.

“We had a yard sale in the past, and it made a lot of money,” she said. “People have brought in several big items. We have tried different fundraisers in the past, and people are into thrifting and yard sales right now. Last week, we had a patient who needed a hospital bed, which we provide. Her family donated her sleigh bed to the yard sale. We are helping patients, and they are helping us.”

According to the Alabama Hospice of The Shoals website, the group designs a specific plan to help people live as fully and comfortably as possible in the final stages of life – in the comfort of their own home or place of residence.

“Some patients are able to stay at home, but some are in a facility,” Coke said. “We provide extra help with things likes nurses, aides and volunteers that help with different things. We have a chaplain and a social worker that visit once a month. We help them get on Medicaid and signed up for meals on wheels if they need it. We try to help people live out their remaining days in the comfort of their home and try to keep them out of hospital as much as can.”
