Ritz to host ‘Something Rotten’ play

The Tennessee Valley Arts Association will soon be hosting a play that is a huge “crowd pleaser” despite its potentially smelly name.

“Something Rotten!” will have showtimes at the Ritz Theatre in Sheffield on July 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. and one 2 p.m. showing on July 13.

Tickets start at $15. For more information, visit tennesseevalleyarts.org or call 256-383-0533.

“‘Something Rotten!’ is a spectacular show that I’ve dreamed of putting on for years, and it takes a special group of artists to tackle it,” said Suzanne Reese-Mills, artistic director for TVAA.

“My SummerStock at The Ritz team is so lucky to work with local actors and musicians who are both beautifully thoughtful and hilariously playful in their approach to scripts and scores. This seeming contradiction is mirrored in ‘Something Rotten!’, which is an absurd and irreverent comedy that somehow also rings strikingly true.”

Reese-Mills said regulars to the theater and novices alike will be pleased by the play.

“The writing is clever and self-referential, with lots of jokes and allusions to other musicals that the die-hard fans will recognize, and preposterously funny takes on historical figures and periods that are familiar to all,” she said.

“Combining all that with Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick’s brilliant music, ‘Something Rotten!’ is a show I would encourage anyone to run to see any time it is playing, and I look forward to watching it many times myself from the back of the historic — and newly renovated — Ritz Theatre as this amazing cast and orchestra bring it to the stage. I hope everyone in The Shoals area will join me.”

The Ritz Theatre is located at 111 W 3rd St.
