Visitors learn about ‘Animalogy’ at Muscle Shoals Library

Visitors attending the Animalogy program at Muscle Shoals Public Library on June 26 had a hoot. In more ways than one.

Bob Tarter of Natural History Educational Company of the Midsouth introduced the crowd to several different animals, including an owl and various reptiles, as part of the MSPL’s summer reading program.

“Each summer, the Muscle Shoals Public Library’s Summer Reading Program brings our community together through the joy of reading,” said Programming Librarian Anna Catherine Riley. “This year’s theme, Unearth a Story,’ encourages readers of all ages to discover new books, explore new ideas, and build a lifelong love of learning.

“We are thrilled to have 411 participants registered so far, and together they have already read and logged an incredible 5,845 books! Every page turned is a step toward stronger literacy skills, greater confidence, and a brighter future for our readers.”

The library hosts a number of programs throughout the summer to coincide with the reading program to not only help keep the readers interested in books but to learn new facts and explore unknown avenues.

“The Summer Reading Program is about so much more than reaching a reading goal,” Riley said. “It helps prevent the ‘summer slide,’ keeping children engaged and learning while school is out. It also creates opportunities for families to read together, attend free educational programs and connect with friends and neighbors at the library.

“Whether someone reads one book or 100, every story matters. Our community is working together to reach — and hopefully surpass — last year’s milestone of 10,000 books read, proving that when we read together, we grow together. We’re so proud of everyone who has joined us on this year’s adventure to Unearth a Story!”

The summer reading program at MSPL runs through July 23.
