Basden retires after 18 seasons at helm of Trojans football
There might not be a single player on the Muscle Shoals High School football team that was alive the last time the Trojans took the field under a head coach other than Scott Basden.
Basden has been at the helm of the program for the last 18 years, amassing a record of 170-50 overall, 28-17 in the playoffs and 92-22 in region play.
Basden announced his retirement earlier this year. Outside of Muscle Shoals, he spent four years each as the head coach of Cordova and Parrish in Walker County.
His combined record will be written in the state history books as 239-79 overall and 42-23 in the playoffs across 26 seasons. That’s an overall winning percentage of 75.2 percent across 318 games.
“Thirty years ago, I could not have imagined the journey God had in store for me,” Basden said in a letter written to the Trojan family announcing his retirement. “He blessed me with the opportunity to coach the greatest game on earth. But more importantly, He blessed me with people, including incredible administrators and faithful parents, tough, committed players and some of the finest coaches a man could stand beside.
“It has been an honor of a lifetime to serve as the head coach at Muscle Shoals. I will forever be thankful that I was allowed to stand in that role and lead this program.”
Though a state title ultimately eluded him at MSHS (he won one previously at Cordova), during his tenure the Trojans won eight region titles, had five undefeated regular seasons and made 17-straight playoff appearances, including three semifinals rounds and one state title game.
Students at the school today could easily be forgiven for not knowing that Muscle Shoals football was far from the powerhouse it is today before Basden came to The Shoals.
The Trojans had only made eight playoff appearances in total before Basden, with the program’s first season in 1961.
Muscle Shoals had one semifinal berth and only four total playoff victories in all that time.
Between 1961 and 2007, the Trojans football team had 28 seasons with losing records.
Under Basden, they only had one, going 2-8 during his first year at the helm. His teams never failed to win fewer than six games during the rest of his tenure, and the lone 6-5 mark came during the 2020 season complicated by COVID-19.
Upon learning of Basden’s retirement, then Superintendent of Muscle Shoals City Schools Chad Holden released a statement commending the longtime football coach for his accomplishments at MSHS.
“Coach Scott Basden has cemented a remarkable legacy at Muscle Shoals,” Holden said. “His record of success speaks for itself, and we are forever grateful for the leadership, commitment, and excellence he brought to our program. The standard he established, both on and off the field, has made Muscle Shoals a powerhouse in Alabama year after year. There is no question that the accomplishments under his leadership have positioned us well for continued success.”

Thirty years ago, I could not have imagined the journey God had in store for me. He blessed me with the opportunity to coach the greatest game on earth—but, more importantly, He blessed me with people, including incredible administrators and faithful parents. Tough, committed players. And some of the finest coaches a man could ever stand beside.
To our coaches and your families, thank you. Coaching is not a one-person job. It never has been. It requires sacrifice at home. Long nights. Missed dinners. Extra prayers. Your investment in this program and in our young men has meant more than you know. I am forever grateful to have served alongside you.
To this community, there are not enough words. Your support for this program and for our student-athletes has been unwavering. Friday nights were special because of you. The way you rallied around these young men, not just as players but as people, speaks to the heart of who we are. Muscle Shoals is more than a football town—it’s a family.
To the parents, thank you for trusting me with your sons. That trust is something I have never taken lightly. My prayer was always that we were building men of character, faith, and courage—not just chasing scoreboards. I pray that I made an eternal difference, not just created a Friday night memory.
Millie, thank you for being my rock, my biggest supporter, and the steady strength behind everything I‘ve ever done. I could not have walked this journey without you.
Walker, Bryant, and Bentley, what a blessing it has been to coach you and watch you become the men you are today. That has been my greatest joy.
It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the head coach at Muscle Shoals. I will forever be thankful that I was allowed to stand in that role and lead this program.
As I step away, I do so believing the best is still ahead. Great things are in store for the future. This program will continue to thrive because of the people in this community and the values that built it.
Always remember—wins fade, seasons pass… but we are faMily.
God Bless,
Coach Scott Basden
