Flag retirement ceremony to be conducted on Flag Day, June 14
Colbert County American Legion Post #31 will hold a Flag Retirement Ceremony on Flag Day, Saturday, June 14, in Spring Park (1 Spring Park Rd – South End of Main Street), Tuscumbia. The ceremony, beginning at 9:00 a.m., will be conducted by the American Legion Honor Guard and Post Commander, Doug Hargett. The public is invited to bring flags for disposal and is welcome to remain for a cook-out picnic to follow. Veterans, especially, are encouraged to attend.
The American Flag was adopted in 1777 by the Second Continental Congress. Flag Day was established in 1916 through an Act of Congress, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14th as a day to honor the flag and what it represents. Across the country Flag Day is celebrated with ceremonies, picnics and educational opportunities.
Properly disposing of faded and tattered American flags is essential to show respect for our country and its symbols. In this way commitment to the values and principles which the flag represents is demonstrated. The Veterans of American Legion Post #31 will provide this simple, yet meaningful flag retirement ceremony by solemnly burning the flags.
Worn flags may be offered in advance by placing them in the “mail-type” bin located on Main Street beneath the flag pole in front of Emily Cooper Art Studio and the American Legion Post Hall.
