John Michael Pounders, 74

John Michael Pound­ers was born on July 31, 1950, in Sheffield, Col­bert County, Alabama, the son of Ray Ofus and Betty (Lawler) Pound­ers. He passed from this life on February 26, 2025, in Lufkin, Texas having reached the age of 74 years.

He graduated from High School and joined the Unit­ed States Marine Corps to serve his country. He served during the Vietnam war and received the following dec­orations: the National De­fense Service Medal, the Rifle Marksman Badge, the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Vietnam Campaign Med­al, the Good Conduct Medal and 2 Purple Heart Medals. He attained the rank of Pri­vate First Class (E-2), and his military occupation was as a Rifleman and Proof Di­rector of Small Arms. Upon receiving an honorable dis­charge, he was transferred to the Marine Corps Reserves.

John enjoyed retirement and for as long as he was able, he played pool and en­joyed a game of golf. For re­laxation, he loved listening to music. He took special joy in watching his grandsons playing football and being a part in their lives. He also enjoyed watching television.

He is survived by one son, John Michael Pounders; two grandsons, Kendal and Kyle Metcalf of Longville, LA; two step-daughters, Kendrea Terrell and hus­band Barry and Kimberly Roland and husband James Burt; and a special friend, Glenda Stanley of Alabama.

He is predeceased by his parents and one son, David Pounders.

A Military Graveside Ser­vice will be held in the VA Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, in Hous­ton, Texas, 77038, on Thurs­day, March 6th, 2025 at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow.

Annie Louise Smallwood, 88

Annie Louise Smallwood, 88, Tuscumbia, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2025. Visitation will be Thursday, March 6, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Morrison Funer­al Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will be Fri­day, March 7, at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Ricky Zahnd offici­ating. Interment will be in Calvary Missionary Bap­tist Cemetery, Tuscumbia.

Louise was a member of Calvary Missionary Bap­tist Church and a retired certified nursing assistant. She was preceded in death by her parents, Annie Mae and Roy Lee Mitchell.

Louise is survived by her husband of sixty-nine years, James “Buddy” Smallwood; children, Patsy Carmack (Dennis), Pam McCullough, Paula Dobbs (Clark), Phil­lip Smallwood (Beverly), Debbie Howard (Donnie); brother, O’Neal Mitchell (Debbie); sisters, Eulean Fuller and Emma Jean Mc­Fall; grandchildren, Kyla Preciado (Rapheal), Matt Carmack (Leah), Suzan Danials (James), Jessica Childers (Shorty), Ashton Sims (Tyler), John Dobbs, Koby Dobbs (Kiana), Courtney Daniel (Josh), and Jordan Elkins (Mark); great-grandchildren, Caleb Sibley, Kailey Fleming (Dal­ton), Kaiden Preciado, Harp­er Carmack, C. J. Hamm, Belle Hamm, Tristan Hamm, Austin Daniels, Thatch­er Simms, Walker Simms, Claire Daniel, Cohen Dan­iel, Gemma Elkins, Georgia Elkins, and Mark Elkins, Jr.; and great-great-grandchil­dren, Kaycen Sibley, Carsyn Sibley, and Ellanor Fleming.

Beatrice Byrd Parker

Russell, 88

Beatrice Byrd Parker Rus­sell of Tuscumbia, Alabama, went to her heavenly re­ward on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. She was 88 years old.

She is survived by her son, Donald R. Parker, and daughter-in-law, Alana Johnson Parker, of Shef­field, Alabama; her grand­daughter, Emily Moth­ershed Dread (Jalen) of Spring Hill, Tennessee; and many extended family members and dear friends.

Beatrice was the daugh­ter of James Rowland Byrd and Elvy Alice Sparks of Tuscumbia, Alabama. The youngest of five children, she was raised on the family farm in the rural community of Underwood Mountain in Colbert County. She mar­ried Dewey Preston Parker in November 1951. Beatrice built a life rooted in family and community. Her great­est joy was being moth­er to her only child, Don.

After retiring in the ear­ly 1980s, Beatrice devoted herself to genealogy, pas­sionately researching and documenting the histories of several hundred families across Colbert, Franklin, and surrounding counties. Her work has left a lasting leg­acy for generations to come.

A graveside service will be held at Franklin Memo­rial Gardens in Russellville, AL on Thursday, March 6, at 11:00 a.m. Morri­son Funeral Home in Tus­cumbia will be directing.

Goodman

Nichols, 68

Margaret Goodman Nich­ols, 68, Russellville, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. Visitation will be Sun­day, March 9, from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will immediately follow in the funeral home chapel with Greg Beasley officiating. Interment will be in Hyde Cemetery, Russellville.

Margaret was a longtime resident of Russellville where she retired as a bus driver for the Russellville School System. She was member of Valley Grove Baptist Church. Margaret enjoyed going to yard sales and auctions. She was pre­ceded in death by her father, Oscar Fielder Goodman; mother, Alma Lucille Powell Goodman; brothers, Eugene Goodman and Dennis He­men; sister, Kathy Hester; and husband, Doug NIchols.

Margaret is survived by her son, Gene Tolli­son, Jr. (Kristie); sisters, Phyllis Elaine Hemen and Denise Hemen; grandchil­dren, Ryan Tollison and Mary Tollison; best friends, Bridgett Streetman and Ma­rie Wright; and several niec­es, nephews, and cousins.

Austin Wayne Grissom, 40

Austin Wayne Grissom, 40, of Sheffield passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, following an eigh­teen-month battle with can­cer. He was an Army veter­an, an Emergency Medical Technician, and served a tour of duty in Afghanistan as a Medic. While in the Army he was stationed in Anchorage, AK, where he and Sarah were married. He loved to cook for his fami­ly, friends, and co-workers. Austin loved children and serving others in need. He and Sarah fostered two chil­dren before he became ill.

He was a graduate of the University of Alabama – Huntsville with a de­gree in biology. He was a member of Highland Bap­tist Church in Florence, and an employee of Ford Concrete Construction.

Austin was predeceased by his father, Eddie Wayne Grissom. Survivors include his wife of fourteen years, Sarah Kimbrough Grissom; daughter, Riley Elise; moth­er, Janna Miller; sisters, Am­ber Holt (Chad) and Crys­tal Montreuil (Brandon); brother Clint Grissom (Kai­ley); grandparents, Russell and Barbara Romans; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Morrison Funeral Home in Tuscumbia at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Visitation will be­gin at 1:30pm. Burial will be in Oakwood Ceme­tery, Sheffield, with Rod­ney Shewbart officiating.

Pallbearers will be Chris Wilson, Theo Steinhau­er, Dakota Holt, Blayne Ford, Hugh Ford, Clint Grissom, Stephen Biggs and Jonathan Kimbrough.

Margaret Conley, 86, of Sheffield, passed away on Thursday, March 6th, 2025. Visitation will be Monday, March 10, from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Morrison Fu­neral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with David Conley officiating. Interment will be in Bar­ton Cemetery, Cherokee.

Margaret spent her life caring for her family and taking care of the elderly as a nurse’s aide. She was pre­ceded in death by her par­ents, Allen and Effie George; husband, Harold Conley; stepdaughter, Teresa Booth; son, Mark Conley; sister, Alice Wallace; and brothers, Mitchell and Larry George.

She is survived by her children, Billy Conley, Pa­mela Conley, David Con­ley (Debra), Dale Con­ley (Cindy), Rita Coker (Wade), Barbara Conley, and daughter-in-law, Diane Conley; sister, Marilyn Goss (Glenn); brother, Michael George; grandchildren, Michael Conley (Tasha), Bradley Conley (Kristen), and Kayla Lewis (Logan); and great-grandchildren, Madison Conley, Landen Conley, and Jonah Lewis.

Pallbearers will be Michael Conley, Brad­ley Conley, Jim Sex­ton, Travis Hilton, Turn­er Hilton, Cody Hilton.

Dale Emmitt Cochran, 76

Dale Emmitt Cochran, 76, of Cherokee, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2025. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 10, at Harris Chapel Cemetery.

Dale was a native of Col­bert County and was retired from the State of Alabama. He was a loving and devot­ed father and grandfather. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Emma and Arnold Cochran; broth­ers, Wayne, Elmo, Arnold Gene, and Fred Cochran; and sister, Bernice Simmons.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa Cochran; chil­dren, Nikki, Mary, and Jodie Cochran; brother, Jimmy Cochran; sister, Catherine Springer; grandchildren, Ha­ley Cochran, Zoie McDaniel, Alyson and Belle Jones, Zach and Shannon Jones, DJ and Nevaeh Frazier, and Devon and Bailie Cochran; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Galloway, 44

Matthew Wayne Galloway, 44, of Tuscumbia, AL passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2025 from 1-3 p.m. at Colbert Me­morial Chapel with a grave­side service to follow at 3 p.m. at Colbert Memorial Gardens.

He graduated from Muscle Shoals High School in 1998.

He was a member of Tus­cumbia Church of Christ. Along with working at Times Daily he also had his own Lawn Care service. Matthew loved going to Nascar races and watching wrestling. He loved his family and especially when they had get togethers.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Galloway; parents, Gary and Mitzi Galloway; sister, Stacey Reid (Jamie); stepchil­dren, Laura Beth Richards and Will Richards; in-laws, Phil and Donna Wright; niece, Hailee Card (Travis); numerous aunts and uncles alone with cousins; special pet, Bellarue; and a very special friend, Jason Kerstiens.

Matthew was preceded in death by his grandparents, Conrad and Myrtle Hester and Robert and Virgie Galloway.

Kenneth “Kick” Earl Hamm, age 85, of Sheffield, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2025. Visitation will be Fri­day, March 7th, from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Williams Fu­neral Home of Florence. The service will follow at 3:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ken­neth and Georgia Hamm; sib­lings, Martha Kelley, Ruby Austin, Dorothy McCaig, Charles Hamm, Wilford Hamm, Buddy Hamm, Leon­ard Hamm and Eddie Hamm.

Survivors are his daugh­ter, Elizabeth Woods (San­dy); grandchildren, Hollie Beaver (Adam) and Haley Thrasher; great-grandchil­dren, Alexis Lawson, Mason Beaver, Owen Beaver, Al­exander Bear, Addison Bear.

Audrey “Tootsie” Carey, 74, of Leighton, AL, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2025 in her grand-daughters home in Tennessee. Visita­tion will be held on Saturday March 15, 2025 from 10 to 12 at Colbert Memorial Chapel.

A formidable matriarch with a heart of gold. She was known for her unwavering loyalty, sharp wit, and a presence that commanded respect. She left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her legacy will live on in the stories of her fam­ily and the vibrant spirit she carried throughout her life.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Pride Dawson and Grace Campbell Daw­son; brothers, Pride “June Bug” Dawson Jr., Pride Lou­ie Dawson II; sisters, Kathy Dawson Goodloe, Rose Scog­gin, Betty Fleming, and Mary Gayle Dawson; daughter, Bonnie Carey Massengill; granddaughter, Crystal Carey.

Henry F. Culberson, Jr., 92, Tuscumbia, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2025. A pri­vate memorial service for the family will be held at a later date.

Henry was a veteran of the US Air Force and a pilot for Amer­ican Airlines. He was a member of AARP, the American Legion, and the American Airlines Pi­lots Association. He was pre­ceded in death by his parents, Henry F. and Melba Culberson.

Henry is survived by his wife, Ann Culberson; children, Sheri Taylor, Scott Culber­son (Kelly), and Beth Conley (David); grandchildren, Car­oline Barris (Hogan), Julia McHugh (Jack), Ellen Mad­dox (Jake), Megan Culberson (Kyle Sobotka), and Matthew Culberson; and great-grand­children, Thomas Scott So­botka and Lauren Sobotka.

Janita Reneé Holiday, 68, Florence, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025. Vis­itation will be Wednesday, March 12, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The fu­neral service will be Thurs­day, March 13, in the funeral home chapel, beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Stephen Gill officiating. Interment will be in Cherokee Memorial Park.

Janita was a registered nurse for forty-one years, working first at Humana Hospital, then at ECM Hos­pital, and finally at Hel­en Keller Hospital during that time. She was preced­ed in death by her mother, Dorothy Triplett Holiday.

Janita is survived by her daughter, Raven Holiday; father, James Holiday, Sr.; brothers, James L Holiday, II (Cherry), Tyler B. Holi­day, and Todd S. Holiday; sister, Angela R. Holiday; and grandchildren, Brylon Holiday, Rio Leslie Hobbs, and Milani Leslie Hobbs.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Ed­ward Stout and Ivadell Mitchell (Joe); sister, Wan­da Lang; and grandparents, Marion and Leona Byrd.

Randy is survived by his brother, John­ny Stout (Denise); sis­ter, Diane Wilson (Bob); and nieces and nephews.
