Tuscumbia police catch suspect breaking into Claunch Cafe for 3rd time
The old adage says, “third times a charm,” but in the case of the recent burglaries at Claunch Café in Tuscumbia, the third time proved unlucky for the man believed to be behind the acts.
According to a release from Tuscumbia Police Department, night shift patrol officer Juan Nava caught a person allegedly breaking into the café during the early morning hours on Friday, April 17.
Sgt. Austin Hill of TPD identified the suspect in his report as Dustin Cunningham, 36, of King Street in Tuscumbia, though Colbert County Jail records list him as being from Cherokee.
He has been charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, third-degree theft of property and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Third-degree burglary is a Class C felony in Alabama. Cunningham’s bond was set at $9,500.
“We appreciate tips from the community and the ongoing support of the owners of Claunch Café,” TPD said. “The value of the property taken is less than $100.”
The owners of Claunch, a popular dining spot inside Spring Park, posted about two separate burglaries on social media.
The first post came on April 14.
“Unfortunately we were broken into last night. Whoever it was stole some cash & change out of our register & our cafe phone. We’ve tried calling it but it’s cut off. If anyone needs to reach us call this number to place orders 256-702-8563. Please share to help spread the word. Normally around this time our phone is ringing non stop. Reward if anyone has any information!!!”
Then, on April 16, the owners of the café were forced to make another post after a second break-in.
“Unfortunately I’m having to make this post again. For the second time this week we were broken into at the cafe. Pretty sure it was the same person from the other day. We don’t leave much to be taken so the loss is minimal but our privacy and safety are starting to become a huge concern. We’re asking for everyone near us to be vigilant and pay attention to your surroundings. If you see someone looking or acting suspicious especially after 11pm call the police. This seems to be happening in the late to early hours of the day. We’re still working on trying to get a phone so if anyone needs us today call 256-702-8563.”
A third post came on April 17, but this time its said Tuscumbia PD had apprehended the suspect in the act of a third break-in attempt.
“We want to give a huge shout out to Tuscumbia Police, everyone that shared the post, & to the people that sent messages with tips. I think the one thing everyone can agree on is Nobody likes a thief.”
Claunch Café posted one final update about the incident on April 18.
“We want to take a second to thank everyone again. This past week was a whirlwind of emotions. We’ve been here in Spring Park for almost 30 years. This is our home. The good/great memories we’ve had over the years far outweigh the bad.
“…Over the years there’s been a few bumps in the road where a desperate person would attempt to break in or do damage to the building. That could happen anywhere though. We’ve always taken measures to keep the building locked up, we have motion activated light that cut on when people walk up. Sometimes little things like that help. Sometimes they don’t. This guy was determined to get in. Luckily the police were determined to catch him. We can’t thank the Tuscumbia Police enough for what they have done this week. We also can’t thank everyone that reached out to check on us or that called in with tips.”
