Sheffield Mayor Van Devender recovering after medical emergency

Sheffield Mayor Bryan Van Devender is recovering after a medical emergency led to him being airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Sheffield Fire Chief Matt Mothershed told Shoals Insider emergency responders came to the aid of Van Devender late on Feb. 9, with the city’s police department even providing an escort as the mayor was initially transported to Helen Keller Hospital.

He was then taken to Vanderbilt by helicopter.

Sheffield’s District 3 Council member Dr. Ethan Stokes made an update the following day stating Van Devender had experienced a brain aneurysm, which was successfully repaired.

“He will remain at Vanderbilt Hospital for the next two weeks as he recovers,” Stokes said in a social media post. “To the citizens of Sheffield — we stand together, strong and unafraid. This city council is ready for the task, and I’m just the backup quarterback holding the line until our Five-Star returns. Your thoughts and prayers for Mayor Van Devender are greatly appreciated. Let’s get back up, Sheffield!”

Van Devender gave an update on his condition on Feb. 15 via social media.

He said he experienced a “serious but treatable” medical emergency.

“I am receiving excellent care, my condition is stable and my medical team expects a full recovery with time,” Van Devender said. “City operations continue without interruption. I remain in regular contact with senior staff and council leadership, and all essential work of the City of Sheffield is moving forward.

“I appreciate the many messages of support and ask for understanding as I focus on recovery. I look forward to being back on the ground soon and continuing the work we’ve started together.”
