Faderz ‘The Manly Salon’ open for business in Tuscumbia
It’s no secret that many men like to sit, have a beer and socialize while watching sports on the television or listen to music.
A couple of new business owners took that concept and thought why not be able to do that while getting your hair cut or your nails trimmed?
And thus, the idea for Faderz “The Manly Salon” was born through business partners Debbie Dean and Summer Trapp.
Dean co-owns Faderz with her husband Horace, and Trapp is the manager and a stylist alongside Dean.
“Debbie and I have worked together for over seven years,” Trapp said. “We specialize in men’s hair. We have worked at a couple of different places together. In total, we have over 20 years’ experience in haircutting. We both really love working on the men’s side of things.
“We appreciate the attention to detail that men’s hair has to have. Along the way we have picked up little tidbits from our clients. I wish we had this. I wish we had that. This place would be great if you had this. We collected those things. We both worked corporate for so long. We felt it was time to branch out on our own, and that’s where Faderz came in.”
Dean had the idea that ultimately turned into Faderz about a year ago.
“We were both having a bad day at work, and she said, ‘Why don’t we open a place ourselves?’ I’m a single mom with two girls, and I thought there is no way I am leaving my security,” Trapp said. “A few weeks later she brought it up again, but I said I still can’t. At the beginning of last year, I thought maybe we can.
“We pondered on it, and I bet Debbie looked at 20-30 different buildings. We hit so many dead ends with renting a building, and I felt like I needed another year. But one night, we were together eating dinner, and she said she found a building. I knew I wasn’t going to let her do it alone.”
Faderz officially opened for business on Oct. 21. The salon is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m.to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We are a full-service salon catered to men,” Trapp said. “We do haircuts, straight razor trims on the neck, waxing eyebrows, ears and nose.
“We have a special room where we can do back or chest. We do straight razor shaves, face or head. Manicures and pedicures with no polish to clean up and get those cuticles pushed back.
Dean said she has friends in other parts of the country that have told her finding a place like Faderz is difficult to do in these parts.
Faderz is meant to have a barbershop feel with salon quality service.
Patrons who walk in, grab a cup of coffee, listen to the radio, watch sports on the television, have a free beer with services and talk to other patrons while their kids play on arcade-style gaming cabinets.
“We wanted to incorporate all the ideas we took in over the years,” Dean said.
“Everything here is tailored for men. Some have told us they don’t feel comfortable getting their nails done someplace.
“We wanted to make an environment where a man can come in, sit down, get their hair cut. Open a beer, watch some sports and cut up with the other men.”
“This is an experience,” Trapp said. “We want you to enjoy it.”
While some men may be hesitant about getting a professional manicure or pedicure, it is becoming more common.
Trapp said on opening day she did more manicures than haircuts.
“Men deserve self-care, too,” Trapp said. “You can count hundreds of salons like this in The Shoals for women. Why can’t a man have that?
“This felt like a need for The Shoals. I have lived in Tuscumbia for six years, and it was really important to me to give back to this community. I wanted to be here. My kids go to school here.”
Faderz is located at 117 Highway 72 Suite D.
