American Legion Post 31 to hold flag retirement ceremony
The American Legion Post 31 will host a Flag Retirement Ceremony on Saturday, November 1, at 9:00 a.m. in Spring Park, located in downtown Tuscumbia.
The ceremony will provide the community with an opportunity to properly retire worn, faded, or damaged American flags in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code, which calls for unserviceable flags to be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.
Members of American Legion Post 31 will conduct the ceremony, which will include a brief program explaining the significance of flag retirement and the respect owed to the nation’s emblem. Local veterans, civic groups, and residents are invited to attend.
Community members who have flags in need of retirement may bring them to the ceremony or drop them off beforehand to the postal-type receptacle located at American Legion Post 31 headquarters, 110 ½ North Main Street, Tuscumbia.
The event honors the traditions of patriotism and respect for the flag, while offering an educational moment for younger generations to understand the meaning behind the ceremony.
