Geraldine Thompkins said she wants to combine leadership with transparency in seeking a third term serving as District 2 City Councilwoman.
Thompkins has announced her candidacy for the seat in the Aug. 26 municipal elections. Qualifying begins June 10 according to the Alabama League of Municipalities.
“I am confident that my role as a voice of experience for District 2 will contribute positively to the continued growth of our district,” Thompkins said. “Having been a lifelong resident of
District 2, I understand the unique needs and opportunity our community faces as the city of Tuscumbia unfolds.
“I am committed to representing District 2 with transparency and integrity. An experienced
perspective can be a valuable asset in addressing the district’s needs, and I am ready, willing and able to bring my continued dedication and commitment to the worktable.”
Thompkins said the development of the U. S. 72 Corridor in Tuscumbia is essential for downtown growth as well.
“Throughout my career as a retired educator, I have worked closely with organizations across The Shoals building meaningful relationships with The Shoals Chamber of Commerce, Colbert County Tourism & Convention Board, Volunteer with Colbert County Homeland Security and RSVP, First Baptist Church Tuscumbia Outreach Pray and Go and Tuscumbia City Schools System, where I am also an active grandparent.”
During her time as Councilwoman, Thompkins said she has received continued education
from the Alabama League of Municipalities to do everything she can to make herself a better Councilwoman.
She said we were able to renovate the Willie Green Recreation Center at 609 S. East Street as a major asset in District 2, made road improvements on 10th Street with removal of numerous blighted properties, installation of the William Mansel Long Sr. Memorial Street
marker on the corner of South High Street and East 10th Street.
“I will continue to address some key concerns and issues such as infrastructure and economic growth,” Thompkins said. “The city is about to begin the bidding process to repair the damage at the Willie Green Recreation Center, which took a heavy hit during the Feb. 15 EF-1 tornado.
“Looking ahead, I remain committed to enhancing public safety by supporting our first responders and advancing community policing efforts. As we continue to clean up the tornado damage in District 2, it is our goal to remain “United We Stand” and “United We Can.”
