Column – Week 7 high school football preview
Another week, another rivalry game for the Colbert County Indians.
After falling to Deshler on Sept. 26, the Indians rebounded with a 49-14 victory over county foe Colbert Heights. This marked the first Class 3A, Region 7 win for CCHS so far in 2024.
Colbert County moves to 2-5, 1-3. The loss was the third straight for Colbert Heights after beginning the season 4-0. The Wildcats are now 4-3, 2-2.
The Indians will look to keep those winning ways going while hosting Clements (1-6, 0-4) for homecoming. The Wildcats have some tough sledding ahead with 4-2, 3-1 Rogers, part of a difficult end to the 2024 regular season, as Mars Hill (6-0, 4-0) and Lauderdale County (4-1, 3-1) follow.
Colbert County is 11-1 all-time against Clements and won the meeting of the two 55-13 last year.
The all-time series between Colbert Heights and Rogers is tied at 16-16, with the Pirates winning last year’s meeting 42-0.
Sheffield
The Bulldogs’ winning streak grew to three games with a 39-38 victory over Elkmont last week.
The win puts Sheffield at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in Class 3A, Region 7.
The Bulldogs will host Lauderdale County, a perennially solid opponent, this week.
The last meeting of the two on the gridiron was back in 2015, a 52-14 win for LCHS. The Tigers lead the all-time series 24-16.
Cherokee
It is finally here. A week some Cherokee players said they had circled on the calendar before the 2024 season even began.
The Indians play at Shoals Christian (0-6, 0-4) this week, the team that knocked CHS out of playoff contention last year.
However, last year the Flamer went 5-5 in the regular season. This year, SCHS has yet to win a game, including a 20-6 loss to Belgreen in the school’s first year fielding a team.
For the sake of comparison, Cherokee topped Belgreen 44-0.
I’m not saying Cherokee will definitely win this game, I’m just saying the Indians will be highly motivated to do so.
Especially since Cherokee (5-2, 3-1) is looking to make the postseason, and Meek (3-3, 3-1) and Hackleburg (6-0, 4-0) are still looming.
Just in case it comes up, Cherokee’s points in a game record is 70, set against Tharptown last year, and largest margin of victory is 70, set against *checks notes* Tharptown again in 2017 at 70-0.
Just saying.
