Trojans down reigning state champ Parker to move on
By the second round of the AHSAA high school football playoffs, the wheat has typically been separated from the chaff.
In Muscle Shoals’ case, that meant facing the reigning Class 6A state champion in the second round of the playoffs for the second year in a row.
Once again, Muscle Shoals came out on top.
Two years ago, the Trojans topped Clay-Chalkville 31-21, and now this season Muscle Shoals took down last year’s champion Parker 17-14 at J.F. Moore Stadium.
Not only does the win give the undefeated Trojans (11-0) a third-round contest against Mountain Brook (9-3) on the road on Nov. 21, it marked revenge against the Thundering Herd, who put the Trojans out in the third round of the 2024 postseason.
Though no two teams match up the same, it is worth noting that Parker defeated Mountain Brook 27-11 during the regular season.
Davian Reynolds got Muscle Shoals on the board against Parker with a 22-yard touchdown run, with Jorge Garcia’s point after making it 7-0 Trojans just three minutes into the contest.
Muscle Shoals held Parker to a fourth and 6 attempt in the red zone, but the Thundering Herd connected on the pass to knot the game at 7-7.
The Trojans failed to capitalize on a fumble recovery by Brionni Jones late in the first quarter, and neither team would score again until Parker took the lead with a touchdown at the 4:20 mark of the second period.
Though the Thundering Herd led 14-7 at halftime, a screen pass to Ezra Fowler would remedy that just three minutes into the second half.
Kade Clemmons connected with Fowler in the flat, and the latter followed his blockers before scampering 55 yards for a score that once again tied the game.
Parker seemed poised to retake the lead after returning the ensuing kickoff to the Trojans’ 27-yard line, but an interception by Keivay Foster kept the Thundering Herd off the scoreboard.
In fact, the stout Trojans defense that has allowed just 7.6 points per game this season pitched a second-half shutout thanks in part to multiple turnovers.
The third quarter ended tied at 14-14, but Muscle Shoals would soon take the lead once again.
A trick-play pass to Mhari Johnson seemed to net the Trojans a 20-yard touchdown on fourth and 1, but the score was wiped by a penalty.
Garcia would end up sailing a 42-yard field goal through the uprights, and Muscle Shoals did lead 17-14.
The Thundering Herd once again seemed poised to score and retake the lead, but Christian Pritchard hawked a pass at the goal line to keep Parker out of the end zone.
Muscle Shoals’ ensuing drive stalled out, and Parker would have one last-ditch effort to escape with a win.
The Thundering Herd was down to a third and 13 from its own 37-yard line with just 31 seconds remaining.
The drive was hampered by multiple penalties, but Parker moved the ball to the Muscle Shoals 30-yard line with 13 ticks of the clock remaining.
The Thundering Herd ended up having one last chance to heave the ball at the end zone from the 30, but the pass fell incomplete.
A flag was thrown, but the penalty was against Parker, and Muscle Shoals would earn the second-round win.
