Work to begin soon on Spring Park disc golf course
Residents eager to utilize the new disc golf course to be installed in Spring Park in Tuscumbia received an update during the Aug. 19 City Council meeting.
According to Mayor William Foster, funds have been received for 17 of the 19 holes.
The course will have 18 holes and one practice hole, and construction will be completely paid for by sponsorships.
“We have already ordered the baskets,” Foster said. “We are getting ready to start putting in the concrete pads soon. The Colbert County Disc Golf Club will be putting up the goals with help from some of our guys.”
Jon Avery, president of the disc golf club, said each hole will have a QR code participants can scan to get a preview of that hole.
“Once the course is installed, we are going to use a drone to take video of the course hole by hole,” Avery said. “You will be able to scan a QR code. People can come up with their phone, open the camera, scan the code and get a drone preview of the hole.”
Foster asked if a preview of the entire course could be taken and linked to a QR code at the course’s kiosk near the beginning and practice hole, to which Avery said that was going to be added as well.
Once all of the sponsorship funds are in and the necessary materials are purchased, Avery said it will take around six weeks to put in all the pads and baskets.
“If the weather cooperates,” he said. “Because we are pouring concrete, we can’t do it in the rain, and we can’t wait and let it get too cold outside.”
Avery said the disc golf group is ready to begin installation once all the materials are in.
Foster asked the Council members if they would agree to have the City sponsor the practice hole in honor of the disc golf club’s efforts.
“They are helping us with this so much,” he said. “Mr. Avery has went way above and beyond helping us, as a City I would like to ask we sponsor the practice tee.”
The Council voted unanimously to authorize the $1,000 cost to sponsor the tee in honor of the club.
