Tuscumbia City Council welcomes Scout Troop 7044
The Tuscumbia City Council welcomed Scout Troop 7044 as it discussed a number of agenda items during its meeting on Aug. 19.
Scout Troop 7044 is based in Tuscumbia, and members of the troop visited the Council meeting as part of the process of earning a merit badge.
Troop leader James Nipper said the scouts are required to do a report based on questions he asks after the meeting in order to earn the badge.

James and Drew Nipper address the Tuscumbia City Council on behalf of Scout Troop 7044.
In other business, the Council voted unanimously to establish an official reserve policy for the Tuscumbia Police Department.
Chief Tony Logan said the department has had a reserve program as long as he can remember, with Logan being a reserve himself in 1983.
“We don’t have anything set in stone establishing guidelines for the reserve officer program,” he said.
Mayor William Foster said nothing about the reserve program will change, an ordinance was simply needed to set the guidelines in stone.
Logan said reserve officers receive training, and certain classes are held each year that are mandated.
“We are just making the paperwork line up,” Foster said.
The Council also gave an update on the progress of two pumps needed to run the waterfall feature in Spring Park.
As previously reported, Tennessee Valley Authority agreed to fix one of the two pumps for $5,000, saving the City more than double the cost of the previous lowest bid of $15,000 just to fix the pump motor.
“TVA partners with our communities, and this is something they take to heart,” Foster said. “They got their guys together and fixed a pump for $5,000. That was huge.”
Foster said the Trail of Tears organization has also offered to cover up to $1,000 of the pump repair cost out of proceeds from their T-shirt sales.
“They are a great group,” Foster said. “They dedicated the nearby statue to the waterfall in 2003, and it was funded by motorcyclists who participate in the Trail of Tears. That’s why they wanted to help with the waterfall.”
Foster said he may have “good news” in the future on the other waterfall pump, but nothing was official yet.
The next Council meeting set for Sept. 2 was moved to Sept. 9 due to the former being the Labor Day holiday.
The second meeting of the month will remain on Sept. 16.
