Coldwater Seed and Supply celebrating over 100 years
Many of the houses, buildings and businesses in Tuscumbia boast a historic pedigree.
These entities have withstood the test of time and often play important roles in the community.
One such place is Coldwater Feed and Supply, which is celebrating over 100 years on May 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (108 E 6th St.)
The event will include community fellowship, refreshments and one free blade sharpening per person.
Jennifer Bennetch, operations manager for the store, said all the business’ previous owners have been invited to attend, including the Hoskins family, who brought the store from Florence across the river in the 1900s.
“We are going to have food, gifts for the previous owners and raffles,” Bennetch said. “It’s one of the most exciting things I’ve prepared for. Not being from here originally, it’s an honor to be a part of the occasion. Working here has helped me get to know so many people and experience the community.”
According to information provided by Bennetch, Percy Hoskins purchased Florence Seed and Supply from Billy Wiggins in the early 1900s.
He relocated the business to the spot where it still stands today. It was known as Hoskins Seed Store, which housed a well-known store front and ill-tempered store monkey.
Though the business has changed hands several times since then, it continues to serve the community it has called home for a century.
“This store means so much to so many people,” Bennetch said. “A lot of the people who come in today remember visiting with their parents or grandparents years ago. When they come back, they get a sense of nostalgia and recall those memories coming in as a kid. This is quite a historic place.”
Coldwater Seed and Supply is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Sunday.
